Naming your child is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions you can make as a parent. But what should you actually choose, and where should you get your inspiration from? At Tuttelu, we have collected the most popular baby names in 2023, so read on if you need inspiration for the perfect name for your little girl or boy! The list is based on a calculation by Statistics Denmark.
At the top of the list of the most popular boy names in 2023 is the name Oscar, which has been popular since the 1990s. Next comes the name Karl, which comes from Old Norse and has been a popular boy name since the 19th century. Karl originally means "young man", and is also very popular in Sweden!
The third boy's name on the list is William, which actually comes from the German name "Wilhelm", and has been on the list of popular boy's names in Denmark for many years. Many of the names on the list have been popular for a long time, and therefore one could be tempted to think that many children have exactly the same name. However, this is not the case, as Statistics Denmark has actually found that we are more creative than ever when it comes to name combinations. In Denmark, it is currently the case that approximately 81% of the population has a unique name combination, and therefore they are the only ones called what they are called (Source: Statistics Denmark).
The most popular boy names in 2023 are not surprising if you look at last year, but are still good inspiration if you are looking for the right name for your little boy.

In first place we find the name Alma, which is actually an Italian/Spanish girl's name, and which has been stable at the top of popular girl's names in Denmark since 2020. Next comes the Old Norse name Ida, which has been particularly popular since 2009. The third girl's name on the list is the Latin girl's name Clara, which has actually been popular since the early 1900s, although with the form Klara. Many of the other names on the list, such as Ella, Olivia, Freja, Emma and Luna, have been particularly popular since the early 2010s, and can therefore also be found on the lists of popular girl's names from previous years.
The names on the list are good inspiration if you are going to name your little baby, but are far from the only cute baby names that. For example, if you have a very special baby name in mind, but are in doubt whether it is possible to use, you can use the Danish Appeals Board's search function to see if the name is approved. There are also several pages you can use if you are interested in knowing the meaning and history behind the different names on the list. Name researchers estimate that in Denmark we are still very happy with baby names with a Nordic sound, but have increasingly switched to names that work better internationally. Regardless of which baby name you are looking for, there is certainly plenty of inspiration to be found!
