Tips and Tricks

Becoming a father is wonderful.

Even though all the physical aspects of pregnancy happen for your partner, as a man you have plenty of opportunities to be involved in the process right from the start. The more things you as a father-to-be participate in, including consultations, shopping and generally being involved in your partner's pregnancy and the upcoming birth, the more insight you will gain as a father. And it will give you a much closer relationship with your child. In addition, it also strengthens your relationship that you are together in creating the framework for your child.

You are important – even during pregnancy

As a man, your needs can easily be overlooked during pregnancy. That's why it's important that you, as a father, share your thoughts, ideas and concerns rather than keeping them bottled up. As a couple, there is great benefit in supporting each other and standing together to be parents. It's okay if you, as a father, find the upcoming parenting role overwhelming, or if you find it difficult to deal with. And it's a lot to have to deal with, alone. Talk to your partner about it. You're in this together to become parents. And it's totally okay to talk about what's difficult.

Talk to your loved ones about becoming a father. Maybe you have other fathers in your circle of friends or family who you can talk to about the role of father. Hear about their thoughts and considerations, talk to them about what they found difficult. Talk to your own father or another family member. Even though you have and are parents at different times, there are some things that are common regardless of the year. Your own father probably also had his worries when he was going to be a father.

It can also be a good idea to talk to other men about their thoughts on becoming a father. There can be a lot of good input from both those who have had children and those who have not. You can ask your municipality or if you are attending a midwife consultation, if there are fathers' groups in your hometown or nearby.

Preparation courses for parents

Some municipalities offer preparation courses for parents. Here there is ample opportunity to meet fathers who will be fathers at roughly the same time as you. It is a really good idea to get a network up and running where you can meet and talk about being a father. Especially now that fathers are getting more maternity leave, it is obvious. There is a reason why mothers' groups are still in high demand, a mothers' group can do something very special - I am convinced that fathers' groups can do that too.

If your municipality does not offer fathers' groups, check with the mothers' group; there are probably some fathers there who are also going on maternity leave.
