HOW TO BABYPROOF YOUR HOME

As new parents, there is nothing more important than the safety and well-being of your child. An important part of this is baby proofing your home to create a safe and secure environment for your little one to explore. Here is a little guide full of tips and tricks to help you make your home baby-friendly.

  • Get a baby's perspective: The best place to start baby-proofing your home is to see it from your baby's perspective. Crawl around on your hands and knees to spot hazards at eye level. This will help you identify potential threats you might otherwise have overlooked - and it's a fun way to start!
  • Remove things that can tip over: Babies start pulling themselves up onto furniture and shelves at an early age. Make sure to remove heavy objects or secure them so they can't tip over and cause injury.
  • Cover electrical outlets: Electrical outlets are a source of fascination for young children. Use electrical outlet covers or protectors to prevent your child from sticking their fingers or objects into electrical outlets.
  • Secure doors and drawers: Use childproof locks or latches on cabinets, doors, and drawers that contain dangerous or fragile items. This will prevent your child from accessing dangerous materials!
  • Secure windows: Install window guards or non-slip curtains to prevent accidents at the window or your child from pulling down the curtains.
  • Hide cords and cables: Use cord wraps or make sure to hide cables in hard-to-reach places. This will prevent your child from pulling or chewing on them when they start teething.
  • Invest in safety gates: Place safety gates near stairs to prevent your child from climbing up or down them. Safety gates are generally a good way to keep your child away from areas in the home where accidents can happen.
  • Soften corners and edges: Buy corner protectors and edge protectors to reduce the risk of your child hitting their head on sharp edges and corners.
  • Add non-slip mats: Use non-slip mats under rugs and areas where your child plays to prevent falls.
  • Put dangerous substances out of reach: This one may be a bit obvious, but it makes good sense to move potentially dangerous items like cleaning products, medications, and sharp objects to cabinets or shelves that are inaccessible to your child.
  • Be careful with houseplants: Some houseplants can be poisonous, so consider moving them to a room where your child can't access them and chew on the leaves.
  • Lock the washing machine and dishwasher: Make sure your child cannot open these appliances as they can pose a danger.

Baby-proofing your home is an important part of parenting, but it's also a loving gesture to protect your child and give them the freedom to explore safely. When you take the time to baby-proof your home, you can have peace of mind and enjoy every moment with your little explorer.

Remember, no home is 100% baby-proof, so always keep an eye on your child as they explore. And most importantly, don't let baby-proofing take the joy out of being a parent. This is just another way to show love and care and create a safe and secure environment for your child to grow and develop in!
